Underwater Museum
Directly opposite Alonissos is the island of Peristera, off which and at a depth of about 30 meters is the Underwater Museum, the first of its kind in Greece and which was inaugurated in 2020. The Underwater Museum includes one of the largest wrecks of the Classical Age. It is dated between the years 425 and 420 BC. and due to its size it ranks among the largest merchant ships of its time. It was 30 meters long and 10 meters wide. It carried about 3,000 amphorae, filled with the famous wines of Mendes and Peparithos. The huge merchant ship appears to have been caught in a storm while sailing close to shore, while another possible theory is that a fire broke out on deck, causing it to sink. The Peristera shipwreck is considered to be the oldest and most important shipwreck to be visited on the planet.
